About 168 & Run of the Mill Productions

168 Hour Film Project

The Run of the Mill Film for 2010

We gained a lot of experience in 2008 and 2009, lessons learned that we'll certainly apply in 2010. It happens earlier this year, with verse assignment on February 1, and delivery on February 18th.  We are very exited for this years theme "Hearing God" and can't wait to hear just exactly God will have in store for us. We are really encouraging everyone to come to our September 19th Preview Festival to find out more about the many ways to get involved!

Grace and Peace,

Jack McClintock

What is 168?

Founded by former Upper Arlington Lutheran Church member John Ware as a ministry to his colleagues in Hollywood, the 168 Film Project is a global competition in “speed filmmaking.” Teams from around the world have one week (168 hours) to shoot and edit a short inspirational film (less than 11 minutes). Each team’s film is based on a randomly-selected Bible verse related to the annual theme, which for 2010 is “Hearing God.”   In the 7 years since its inception over 350 films have been made, some featuring top-name technical and acting talent. All films are screened at a festival in Hollywood in April.  Selected films are distributed in a "Best Of 168" compilation DVD and used as ministry tools world-wide.  Details can be found at www.168project.com.

UALC Connection

The 168 Hour Film Project has received support from UALC’s Missions outreach for several years, but it’s long been a vision of some for our church to form a team and enter the contest.

In 2007, members of the UALC Visual Arts Ministry formed a team to take on the challenge. In 2008 we produced our first film, "Dash" where we found God using us to create a cross-cultural, cross-generational and even cross-denominational ministry.

In 2008-2009, We did it again with a new production titles "Like Father"

NOW! IN 2010, the team is being completely re-organized and a new production will be made under the theme of "Hearing God".

Run of the Mill ProductionsRun of the Mill Productions

We chose this quirky name not only because of the play on words with our Mill Run campus, but mainly because we’re not Hollywood elite. We’re ordinary people with an extraordinary vision: illuminating God's word on film (or more accurately, digital video).

Regardless of whether we win an award or achieve mass distribution, we realize that for the filmmakers and cast, the rewards are in the process.  We’re all discovering that making a “real” film is a lot bigger job than pointing the camera at someone and saying, “action,” and the 168 framework poses a significant faith-building challenge!

The 168 Challenge

The competition rules are very precise. We cannot write a script until after Verse Assignment night, one week prior to when shooting begins. During that pre-production week we will write our script, cast the actors, build set or determine locations and rehearse. One week later at 2pm our 168 hours begins and we are allowed to roll cameras. All filming and editing has to be complete and in the FedEx box by 2pm the following week – 168 hours later. It is a daunting task so impossible that the only way it will work is if God shows up! We believe He will!!!
